New GDPR and how JDA Complies

General Data Protection Regulations

What is GDPR?

GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation and it will change how organisations process and handle data, replacing the old data protection directive from 1995. The aim of this new legislation is to synchronise data privacy laws throughout Europe, whilst also giving greater protection and rights to individuals.

When is it effective from?

It comes into effect from 25th May 2018.

What data does this apply to?

The data that this relates to is essentially any piece of information which could identify you. This will include your name, address, phone numbers and email addresses.

What rights will you have under GDPR?

Under GDPR you will have a number of rights. These are:

  • The right to be informed - we must be completely transparent in how we are using personal data.
  • The right to access - you will have the right to know exactly what information is held about you and how it is used or processed.
  • The right to erasure - also known as the right to be 'forgotten'. This means that you can have your personal data deleted or removed without the need for a specific reason as to why you wish this to be.
  • The right to restrict processing - you can block or suppress processing of personal data.
  • The right to data portability - this allows you to retain and reuse your personal data for your own purpose.
  • The right to object - in certain circumstances, you are entitled to object to your personal data being used.

What does this mean for you?

The single biggest change is how we will collect and share your data. We will tell you how we use it and in some circumstances how it is shared. This will vary dependent on whether you are a supporter, service user, member, volunteer or employee. Full details of how we handle your data in compliance with GDPR can be found in our Privacy Policy.

Where is your data used currently?

JDA uses the data collected to maintain accurate internal records of our supporters, volunteers, staff, service users and their families and others, and our engagement with them. These records facilitate our activities run in accordance with our charitable objectives, communicating with our supporters and raising funds and awareness about our work through campaigns and events.

How secure is your personal information on JDA's database?

The CRM software we use is called eTapestry and is a product of Blackbaud Europe. Blackbaud Europe is fully committed to making sure their solutions are compliant with all regulations, as they are currently.

What if you do not want your data to be used?

You have the right to opt out and can change your preferences at anytime by contacting our Data Protection Officer at: dataprotection@jdeaf.org.uk.
