Lady helping man with hearing aid

The "Hearing Matters In Care" Service is enabling older residents more equal access to facilities and community life in care homes across Barnet.

Residents with hearing loss are generally isolated, have little hearing support from care home staff and are unable to take part in activities such as quizzes and talks - because their hearing aids are not in working order, or they need extra hearing support.  Many residents also have varying levels of dementia, so mental stimulation and good communication is essential to their ongoing care.

We are recruiting volunteers to enable residents to access services in their care home and to be more stimulated, inspired and active:

Volunteer Technician

Too often, staff don’t have the time to sort out a hearing aid that isn’t working, leaving the resident unable to join in conversations, to participate in activities, to be social. Instead, they are left alone in their rooms day after day, isolated and lonely.

You will visit residents in care homes once every six weeks, ensuring their hearing aids are in good working order, re-tubing ear moulds and suppling new batteries.  By helping to put hearing loss higher up the agenda within the care home, you’ll help residents get much more out of life.

The role is ideal for someone who has a technical and inquiring mind.

Volunteering information

All volunteers work closely with the Service Manager to place hearing loss firmly on the agenda for management and staff in residential homes.

All roles come with extensive, high-quality training and support and provide an opportunity to become part of a friendly, close-knit team of dedicated volunteers.
