Families with deaf children

HEAR to Learn

"We would never teach reading in a classroom without lights. Why then would we teach in 'acoustic darkness'? Speaking to a class in a room with poor acoustics is akin to turning out the light." - Professor John Erdreich, Scientific Council in Acoustics

Poor acoustics in schools creates a challenging environment in which deaf children struggle to learn. Their results suffer and they come home exhausted and frustrated. Acoustically treating schools can make a fundamental difference to deaf pupils. It enables them to learn, to join in, hear their teacher and classmates, fully participate and succeed on an equal footing with their hearing peers.

In 2018, the JDA began a campaign to raise money to acoustically treat classrooms and shared spaces in Jewish mainstream schools.  A number of schools have now been acoustically treated across North London and Hertfordshire.  If you would like information on which schools have been acoustically treated, please contact us.

JDA also offers deaf awareness training in schools. To find out more see here and view our training materials below.
