On the night our guest speaker will be Dr James Jackson from University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa) - via Leeds University, who is undertaking a study:
“Evaluation of an online mindfulness approach to manage tinnitus distress”. It is being supported and advertised by Tinnitus UK across social media (LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.). Here's some additional information about the study, sent in advance:
In Dr Jackson’s latest paper (Jackson & Woolmer, 2024), 105 participants took part in a study utilising an eight week, fully online Mindfulness Intervention for Tinnitus. Within two months, 30% of the intervention group saw a clinically significant reduction in their tinnitus distress, a significant increase in mindful thought, and a significant reduction in negative thoughts about their tinnitus. This latest study will provide the same intervention to all participants, but we are monitoring progress over a longer period of time (six months) and we are also considering certain personality traits, to investigate whether these things matter. If they do, this will help support patient-centred interventions for tinnitus in future. If not, then this intervention may be of use for all tinnitus patients.
In case you are interested, Springer Nature (the publisher) offers a free copy of the previous paper (Jackson & Woolmer, 2024) to view at:
The second half of the meeting will be the usual group discussion.
